A remake of Eli Roth's first movie; and excellent Spanish Thriller; the worst threesome ever; and a Horror Anthology that takes you on a trip through hell... this is a pretty solid week for new VOD releases.
We have yet to watch Cabin Fever or Nina Forever (so we can't vouch for their quality either way), but if you're only renting one movie this weekend, make it Marshland. Southbound would be a good rental too.
*Be sure to click the pics to rent the movies, or watch their trailers. Or both. Or neither. It really depends on your mood, now doesn't it?
CABIN FEVER |
A group of five college graduates rent a cabin in the woods and begin to fall victim to a horrifying flesh-eating virus, which attracts the unwanted attention of the homicidal locals.
A remake of Eli Roth's first movie, Cabin Fever, this 2016 version has not been getting very many kind reviews so far. We liked the trailer for this one a lot, but we all know that trailers don't mean a damn thing when it comes to the quality of a movie, so we'll be checking this one out tonight, and hope it doesn't suck.
Fingers crossed.
MARSHLAND |
In the MARSHLAND a serial killer is on the loose. Two homicide detectives who appear to be poles apart must settle their differences and bring the murderer to justice before more young women lose their lives.
One of the best movies that we saw in 2015, and in recent years for that matter, Marshland is a must see for anyone who loves gritty Cop Thrillers. Check out our review below to see exactly why we loved this one so much, but in short, it's visually breathtaking, intense, and just well-made on every level.
This is a Spanish film, so there will be subtitles involved for anyone who doesn't speak the language, but please don't let that dissuade you from experiencing this near-perfect Thriller.
NINA FOREVER |
After his girlfriend Nina dies in a car crash, Rob unsuccessfully attempts suicide. As he begins to overcome his grief, he falls in love with a coworker, Holly. Their relationship is complicated when Nina, unable to find rest in the afterlife, comes back to life to sarcastically torment them whenever they have sex.
Nina Forever sounds a lot like last year's Burying the Ex (review HERE), in both its plot and Dark Comedy subject matter. We liked that one, so that's fine with us as long as Nina can tell us the same type of story in its own, fresh way. According to many of the advanced reviews that we've read, it does exactly that.
This is one we'll be checking out this weekend, as it seems like a fun movie to watch for Valentine's Day.
SOUTHBOUND |
Finally we have Southbound; a Horror Anthology that we really enjoyed. It didn't live up to all of the insanely positive hype that surrounded it when it made its Festival rounds last year (most movies don't), but it's definitely the best effort that the team behind the V/H/S movies have given us, and it was a solid flick overall.
Read our review below for more of our thoughts on the movie.
There are only two movies down here this week, and both of them look decent enough.
- The Found Footage flick Hangman has got a good cast and an interesting Home Invasion angle going for it, so we'll probably check it out soon.
- Sociopathia looks like a cheaper Indie movie, but the trailer looks solid enough to warrant a watch. Eventually.
