Johnny Deep in method acting gangster mode; and underrated 80's Slasher; and some more goodies from The Vincent Price Collection... This is The Digital Dread Report for 2/16!
This isn't a very big week as far as Must Own releases go, but given the fact that next week is going to be a monster, we can deal with a lull in the movie action. There are still some great flicks hitting Blu-ray & DVD this week though, so let's take a look.
*Be sure to click the pics to order yourself a movie or two, or to check out their trailers (Amazon usually has those about halfway down each movie's page.)
"In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger (Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history."
We're suckers for gangster flicks around here, but we include Black Mass at the top of our list this week because Johnny Depp's performance as Whitey Bulger was a terrifying thing to behold. We'd probably give the movie a B if we were grading it, but Depp's performance was A+ all the way.
We'll revisit this Blu-ray regularly just to see him do his thing.
Special Features:
- The Manhunt for Whitey Bulger.
- Johnny Depp: Becoming Whitey Bulger.
- Black Mass: Deepest Cover, Darkest Crime.
"When Ed receives a message from his father asking him to go and lock up the family’s beach condo for the winter, it seems like the perfect excuse for an alcohol-fuelled few days away with his friends. After all, his dad has forgiven him for accidentally blowing mom away with a shotgun several years ago… hasn’t he? But no sooner are the teens on the island than they find themselves stalked by a figure with an axe (and a hook, and an onboard motor) to grind…"
The one release this week that we feel compelled to own immediately is the 80's Slasher flick, The Mutilator.
The early 80's was owned by the Slasher flick (at least Horror-wise), but by the time The Mutilator was released in 1985, the insanely popular sub-genre was starting to lose steam. Because of this, The Mutilator never gained the popularity that it probably should have, as it's a wonderfully gory spectacle that delivers the 80's goods in a nasty, fun way.
Now, thanks to Arrow Video, it's finally on Blu-ray, for the first time ever. If anyone can make this flick look and sound its absolute best, it's them. We're really starting to love these guys.
Special Features:
- Brand new 2K restoration from original vault materials of the R-rated and Unrated versions of the film.
- High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations.
- Original mono audio (uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray)
- Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
- Brand new interviews with cast and crew.
- Reversible sleeve featuring original artwork to be revealed.
- Fully-illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film alongside archive articles from Fangoria magazine.
"Get ready for five chilling tales of terror starring the master of horror Vincent Price!"
While this 4-Disc Blu-ray set is nothing that I am personally fiending for, Vincent Price is a Horror Icon who has a massive following, and so The Vincent Price Collection III will no doubt be a Must Own for most of them.
Included i the set are 5 Vincent Price movies, all of which boast new HD masters, and offer a ton of cool Bonus Features:
- Master of the World (1961)
- Tower of London (1962)
- Diary of a Madman (1963)
- Cry of the Banshee (1970)
- An Evening of Edgar Allan Poe (1970)
Scream Factory did a great job with Parts I & II of the Vincent Price Collection, and there's no doubt that this one will be equally great, even if the films included aren't amongst his best.
There are all kinds of interesting and even endearing movies at the bottom of the lineup this week.
- Estranged looks watchable, at the very least.
- When we said endearing above, we meant My Science Project. We grew up on this 80's Comedy, and seeing it hit Blu-ray makes us nostalgia hard. For $6.99, we're probably going to end up buying this one.
- Anther Arrow Video title that looks cool as hell, Pray For Death was one of the best Ninja flicks of the 80's, and there were a TON of them. Sho Kosugi was the man.
- I know, what in the hell is Steve Jobs doing on a list of Horror movies, right? Well we include it here because it was one of the best movies that we saw in 2015, and variety is the spice of life! Michael Fassbender was ridiculously good in this.
- We have to give a quick shout out to the Iron Giant too, as it's a great kid's flick that we still love to this day. Why it's only being released on DVD and not Blu-ray is beyond us though.
- Everything else, as always, is a crap-shoot.
